Regatta

I contemplated waiting to write a piece on the Pittsburgh Regatta until the week of, but let’s get the hype train going. If you’re a Pittsburgher, I don’t have to say anything more. You simply know…”You gotta Regatta!”

To those who may be unfamiliar, the Pittsburgh EQT Three Rivers Regatta was founded in 1977 and instantly became a summertime staple in the Steel City. So much so that, in 1982, it was home to the first F1 power boat race held in the United States. The summertime festival is a blend of the arts, music, amusement park rides, entertainment, water sports, extreme sports, food, more food, even more food, and much more. Oh, did I mention food? 😉

Arguably the most popular family-friendly annual event in Pittsburgh, the EQT Three Rivers Regatta returns to the event’s traditional August calendar spot, running from August 5th – 7th, rather than coinciding with the 4th of July weekend. Reports have stated the move was made for weather purposes, as last year’s water events were cancelled due to inclement weather and bad river conditions.

The Regatta is always packed with an all-star music lineup, and this year is no different. 90’s rockers Better Than Ezra and the Gin Blossoms will be taking the main stage, as well as country music star Rodney Atkins. You won’t want to miss some of the best local bands around, too. The icing on the cake? This year’s fireworks display will pay homage to music icon Prince, with a “Purple Rain” themed fireworks and FX showcase on Sunday night! (Save me a seat for “When Doves Cry” comes on.)

To those outside of this wonderful city, you’ll want to check out this wonderful guide to all things Regatta. If you’re considering relocating to the Steel City, this is the annual event you won’t want to miss. To my fellow Pittsburghers…see you there!
