Clemente

Hall of Fame slugger Roberto Clemente was born 82 years ago today. As a sports fan, I don’t know if there’s a more important sports figure in Pittsburgh history. He was a man in every sense of the word: an all-star on the field, and an all-star humanitarian off the field. In this author’s personal opinion, although I may be biased, I believe his #21 should be retired next to Jackie Robinson’s #42. He was that influential, that meaningful, that powerful, and that important to the history of the game of baseball.

Rather than waxing poetic and pining over the many ways I feel Roberto Clemente was the most important sports figure in Pittsburgh history (more so than Mario Lemieux or any of your favorite Steelers), for the first time I’ve attached a tribute video to my blog to explain better than I ever could. Roberto Clemente transcended baseball. Roberto Clemente transcended Pittsburgh. Roberto Clemente was more than a man. He was a real life superhero. We’ll never forget you, Roberto. Happy birthday!

Oh…and before I forget. Please allow me to repeat myself. Retire #21 league-wide, MLB! You know it’s the right thing to do. 😉
